Week of May 27, 2007 - First draft of plans arrive for review and modification!

Week of Feb. 23, 2007 - Contract is signed with Shelter Planners of America to begin the feasibility study and architectural plans of the new shelter.  $30,000 has been raised!

May 1, 2008 - The work continues behind the scenes toward a new, state-of-the-art shelter for Kalamazoo County.  The initial floor plans were purchased and are very impressive!  The architectural layout for this facility is unique, as there are seemingly no other animal shelters in the United States using our particular model of collaboration.  Not surprisingly, then, after reviewing the first draft of the plans, we suggested some important design modifications that we felt would improve the facility and better suit our needs.  We anticipate more drawing changes before the floor plans are finalized.

While amending the floor plans, we have been working on budgets and business plans to present to the individuals who will be invited to participate in the feasibility study later this year.  This work is happening quietly as we speak and will not receive much publicity.  Because of this, at times it may appear that the ‘New Shelter Project’ has stalled, when in fact it is progressing well along a realistic timeline.

Because of the size and importance of this project to the community, there will be seemingly slow periods of progress while the details are continually being worked out.  Without a similar model to refer to, there is much more work involved with this unique project.

We want to thank everyone for their continued support of this important landmark shelter for the animals of Kalamazoo County.
